CATALOGUE NOTE
This charming portrait was painted The Hague around 1660-1665 by an at present unidentified painter. Previously this portrait was given to the Anglo-Dutch painter Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen I (London 1593 – Utrecht 1661). A letter of authenticity from Georgetown University compares the present work with a three-quarter length portrait by Van Ceulen in the collection of the Utrecht Centraal Museum (inv.nr. 1952.159). The RKD in The Hague has the portrait recorded as by Simon Pietersz. Verelst (The Hague 1644 – London ca. 1710/6) under nr. 393065. In addition the influence of the The Hague portraitist Jan Mijtens (ca. 1614 – 1670) is also apparent. Still, the present work displays a distinct style that does not related with the above mentioned masters. Its quality is notable, as are the details in the hair and the remarkable colours in the turquoise dress and scarf.
